Vivian Gussin Paley zum Geburtstag (25.1.1929 – 26.7.2019)
Wie Margaret Meek, meine verehrte Lehrerin, hat Vivian Gussin Paley ein hohes Alter erreicht.
Dem Alten war es vor langen Jahren gegönnt, mit der frisch pensionierten Paley ein Seminar am altehrwürdigen Institut Pédagogique zu organisieren und mitzugestalten.
Anbei 2 Fotos dieses denkwürdigen Seminars sowie ein Text, den Paley eigens für ihren öffentlichen Vortrag Im Kulturzentrum Walferdange verfasst hat. Es ging natürlich um die Liebe ihres Lebens: Spiel und Geschichten (storying).
Die Wichtigkeit von Spiel und Geschichten für die intellektuelle Entwicklung der Kinder (Menschen) machen gerade diese beiden Elemente zu den wechselseitigen originären und multimodalen Lernwerkzeugen der Menschheit. Schauen und lesen Sie selbst:

Lehrpersonen und Lehrpersönlichkeiten sollten sich Paleys Bemerkungen vor jedem Trimester mindestens einmal anhören.
Alle ihre Bücher sind ausnahmslos zu empfehlen und zu konsumieren, besonders des Alten Lieblinge, allen voran Wally´s Stories gefolgt von The Boy Who Would Be a Helicopter.
Es tut gut, die verständige Stimme von Vivian Gussin Paley zu hören und zu beherzigen, besonders wenn es um Respekt, Selbstachtung und Selbstvertrauen geht:
«The key is curiosity, and it is curiosity, not answers that we model. As we seek to know more about a child, we demonstrate the acts of observing, listening, questioning and wondering. When we are curious about a child’s words and our responses to those words, the child feels respected. The child is respected. „What are the ideas that I have that are so interesting to the teacher? I must be somebody with good ideas. Children who know others are listening may begin to listen to themselves, and if the teacher acts as the tape recorder, they may one day become their own critics.»

Alle Fragen offen! So steht Vivian Gussin Paley mitten im Schulalltag und zeigt den Test- und Klassifizierungsweltmeistern eine tiefrote Karte:
«We are not, any of us, to be found in sets of tasks or lists of attributes; we cannot be defined or classified. We can be known only in the singular unfolding of our unique stories within the context of everyday events. (…) Our classrooms (…) are cultures in the making, we and the children inventing new rules for ourselves every day. We never discover how all the pieces fit or what every behavior means, and the stories we tell of classroom life must, of necessity, end in question marks and untied threads. (…) As a storyteller, I will avoid labels and theories that offer answers before the questions have been imagined.»
